The Adventures of Spunky the Monkey

Spunky the monkey pulled his little diaper off and threw it on the window of the spacecraft, where it tumbled to the ground, unseen by the occupants of the control deck, who were focussed on their pre-launch checklist.

Spunky had only moments to reach the craft’s interior before the outer doors closed for launch. Scampering over the rigging holding the spacecraft upright, Spunky reached the edge of the structure, with the open door still tantalisingly out of reach.

Swinging from the rigging by one arm to gain momentum, Spunky hurled himself towards the entrance, catching the edge with his outflung fingertips. Tensing his strong arms, he pulled himself up and into the airlock only seconds before the heavy door thudded into place behind him.

A deep voice sounded over the speaker system: “T minus 30 seconds and counting”. Spunky knew he had to get to the sickbay’s spare acceleration couch before the countdown reached zero. He rounded the corner into the narrow corridor, loping on all fours for speed, towards his only hope for surviving the launch.

Spunky hurled himself into the cryo chamber on the A.C and slammed the cover closed on him and his family just as the cryo gases filled the chamber and they heard, "T minus 3 -2 -1- ignition."

Spunky laid in silence as his heart continued to race. His family had succumbed to the embrace of sleep, but his still rampaging adrenaline peaked his alertness. The frantically pounding beat of his heart overwhelmed his body.

The thought of journeying into deep space made Spunky's stomach turn. Why hadn't he listened? Spunky looked down on the slowly rising chests of his family. If he had just done what was expected of him, they would not be bound in this chamber, hurling into the darkness of the universe.

His heart slowed, the pounding of his blood racing through his veins no longer assaulted his head. Spunky allowed his arms to relax on the base of the chamber while his side pressed against his mate's back.

A dark shadow crept inward from the edges of Spunky's vision. His chest rose in deep inhalation before exhaling into the darkness of sleep.

It seemed just a second later when Spunky'e eyes opened and he saw his arms floating freely. His family soon woke too. They explored the sleep room and found they were awake alone. He found a ship map and status screen and discovered they had docked with a space station with thousands of pods and each held 1000 frozen travellers. They had much to explore as the ship sped to its unknown destination.

To be continued...
